Nine Books Made Into Movies: Featured Auction Items

On Monday, September 18, more than 200 lots of books that were adapted into a movie or mini-series will be up for auction. This auction is the second of three events by Alderfer Auctions in the Books Made into Movies series. Available books are titles beginning with the letters G through O. While several classic novels will be featured in the auction, we’ve got our eyes set on the modern box-office hits.

Here’s a few of our favorite books made into movies available for sale in this auction:

Game of Thrones - Books Made into Movies

A Game of Thrones – The first novel in the A Song of Fire and Ice series by George R. R. Martin, this book inspired the first season of the incredibly popular HBO Series of the same name. Written in 1996, the book was picked up by HBO in 2011, and is expected to conclude with its eighth season in 2019.

The Girl on the Train – Published in 2015, The Girl on the Train is a psychological thriller written by Paula Hawkins. The movie premiered in 2016 and featured several notable actors, including Emily Blunt, Justin Theroux, Luke Evans, Allison Janney, and Lisa Kudrow.

Gone Girl – This twisted and dark story sticks with you. First published in 2012, Gone Girl by Jillian Flynn was quickly adapted into a movie – released in 2014, and starring Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, and Neil Patrick Harris.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played With Fire – Both novels were a part of the Millennium series, released shortly after the death of author Stieg Larsson in 2004 and originally only available in Swedish. The novels were adapted into movies within five years of their release. Classified as mystery, crime, and psychological thriller, the novels follow two main characters portrayed by Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.

The Help –  A New York Times Bestseller, The Help was written by Kathryn Stockett and tells the story of house workers in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960s. Superstars Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis, and Jessica Chastain starred in the four-time Academy Award nominated film. The book available for auction is signed, making it a collectible item.

The Kite Runner – Released in 2003, the novel by Khaled Hosseini stood atop the New York Times Bestseller list for more than two years. Adapted as a film in 2007, the film was nominated for an Academy Award in 2008.

Life of Pi –  A surreal story about a boy and a tiger afloat at sea, Life of Pi was written by Canadian author Yann Martel and published in 2001. The 2012 adaptation was critically acclaimed, receiving eleven Academy Award nominations, and winning a record-setting four awards.

Hunger Games Series – The well-known Hunger Games series follows the story of a dystopian society called Panem, separated into twelve districts and home to the annual televised death match to maintain order in the region.  The three novels were adapted into four feature length movies with a star-studded cast, including Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, and Woody Harrelson.

The Notebook – The Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams romance film was a fast hit, gaining a cult following after its release. But before it was a film, it was a novel by Nicholas Sparks, the well-known romance author who has penned several novels that would become popular movies, including A Walk To Remember, Nights in Rodanthe, The Last Song, and Dear John. The novel was originally released in 1996 and was Spark’s first romance novel to reach commercial success.
